Aldosterone receptor antagonists

A drug may be classified by the chemical type of the active ingredient or by the way it is used to treat a particular condition. Each drug can be classified into one or more drug classes.

The main action of aldosterone is to increase sodium re-absorption by the kidneys. At the same time it increases the excretion of hydrogen and potassium ions.

Aldosterone receptor antagonists block the effects of aldosterone, therefore decrease sodium re-absorption and water retention by the kidneys and consequently lead to a decrease in blood pressure.

Aldosterone receptor antagonists are used to treat hypertension.
